When to Use Hydrogel Pads
Although new mothers often hear that breastfeeding shouldn't hurt, it can actually take some time for your nipples to adjust to the frequency and duration of breastfeeding sessions. Combined with hormonal changes in the first few days after childbirth, this can cause your nipples to become sensitive and sore. In such cases, hydrogel pads can be helpful, providing immediate relief and pain relief. They also prevent nipples from rubbing against clothing and support the healing process if skin damage has occurred.
Caring for cracked nipples
Remember that sensitive or cracked nipples can be a sign of improper latch during feeding, so it's worth consulting a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist. If you notice bleeding or burning nipples during feeding, or if the healing process is slow, it's best to consult a lactation consultant or doctor, as this could indicate a breast infection or other condition requiring treatment.
How do hydrogel nipple pads work?
Medela hydrogel pads are made with a special formula that adheres to the skin, creating a protective, cooling layer that promotes healing. They are large enough to cover the entire nipple and areola (the darker skin around the nipple), as soreness can affect this entire area.
To insert the breast pad, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands, open the pouch, and remove the hydrogel pad from the plastic cover.
- Carefully place the hydrogel side of the pad directly on your nipple.
- Before feeding your baby, remove the pad and place it on a clean surface.
- Then gently rinse your breast with warm water and towel dry before feeding.
- After each feeding, reapply the hydrogel pad with clean hands.
Are hydrogel pads reusable?
Yes, you can reuse the same hydrogel pad multiple times within a 24-hour period. Simply store it in a cool, clean, and dry place between uses—no need to clean it with soap or other detergent. You can also store the pads in the refrigerator to enhance the cooling effect. However, keep them out of reach of children. If the nipple shield becomes dull or cloudy (which rarely happens), discard it and use a fresh pad.
Package Contents
Medela hydrogel pads are sold in packs containing four individually wrapped pads.
